When a Fractional CMO model makes sense.
Sometimes a company needs senior marketing responsibility before it needs, or can justify, another permanent executive hire.
The useful use case
A fractional model is strongest when the company has real commercial traction but fragmented marketing: agencies without a unifying strategy, a founder carrying too many decisions, or a capable team that needs senior direction.
It is not a cheaper employee
The value of the model is not simply fewer days. It is access to executive-level judgement with a defined mandate, without building a full permanent leadership structure immediately.
What the role should own
- Growth priorities and marketing strategy.
- Budget governance and channel decisions.
- Team, agency and supplier alignment.
- CRM, lifecycle and measurement architecture.
- Executive reporting and operating cadence.
When it is the wrong model
If the business needs a full-time employee integrated into day-to-day management, or if the role requires permanent operational coverage, the company should hire accordingly rather than disguise employment as consultancy.
